Everybody stop what you're doing right now and do a snow dance. I mean a real one - like nobody's watching. Maybe even a naked one! We went for a drive around the Great Falls area today and the last few days' melt-off is truly depressing! I'm not ready for winter to end yet. Help a brother out.
Say it ain't so!
But did you do a snow dance?
Cale said he went to Macdonald Pass area this weekend it had lost a foot.
Haggin and the Big Hole are holding though, It only got above freezing for an hour today and its getting in the teens at night. Remember last year, nothing nothing nothing then 3 feet in april. It will happen, maybe not in GF area, but it will happen somewhere.
I got my new 5mil winter wetsuit in just in case.
Joel
Check the Monarch web cam. Shows Rattlesnake Butte SE side still totally white. I hope to hit it again Tu and Wed.
I will call The Tiber Dam today about the Lake up there, there is one spot that doesn't freeze totaly some winters so it could open early.
Hey Buddy - Let me know if you start going out in teh open water... Still have the dry-suit, ready to use it. - Jerome
Time to go higher and deeper - there'll be snow for plenty more days. We've just gotten spoiled by all this great snow in the lowlands. Water - bah
Yeah we've gotten spoiled around GF this winter. I need to remember that most years aren't like this. But still... I've been exploring anything above 4000 feet, but that is melting fast. Here's hoping for that 3 foot dump next week. :D
Gary - Mike and I went to Rattlesnake yesterday but the wind was light. I saw your tracks up high - looks like fun! Did he open another gate north of the parking area? I might go back there, or Jumping Creek later in the week or this weekend. Or maybe Obrien park? Dave, can we get a sled ride? :)
Anyone for seeing what it looks like up in Spur Park? Sled rides available.
I think Rattlesnake Butte needs to be renamed "Gary's Butte" - he owns that place.
Spur park what day? I might be down...
Kinda waiting to see what NOAA says. Stuck with Sat or Sun options this week. 350-2502.
I'll be mad if you guys strike the "mother lode" in Spur Park this weekend without me.
Sounds interesting. I'll watch the weather too and probably be in touch. I'm at 750-0107.
Where's Spur Park?
Try these coordinates on Google Earth 46.79°N 110.59°W
Basically ~ 6-7 miles southeast of Showdown - good groomed trail to get there. Lots of open terrain ~ 7400' - 8100'
Arrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! Wind?????
All the weather stations are reading zero today. Internet must be broken.
Hmmm...Raynold's says it's blowing 15 from the north.
I could get a 1/2 hour session in if I leave now. :D
Made it to Jumping Cr yesterday afternoon....wind was right direction but light & variable. But the snow ....holy crap - re-hardened bile tracks made it like the worst choppy wakeboarding you could imagine. Even the untracked snow was super firm & there is plenty of snow there so with a decent renewal on top of that chop there's plenty of days left in there.
Think I'm headed for Spur Park Sat. I'll park at the Deadman's parking area & hopefully get there ~ 10:30. Spare bile avail. if I know anyone is coming.
Jana and I are heading to Jumping Creek tomorrow at around the same time. Maybe we'll see you in the area. I'm hoping it softens up a bit. Not sure about the wind direction for J.C. though... West is best. If it doesn't pan out we're heading to w.s.s. or showdown.
Spur Park - its bigger than it looks in the photo's. Wish the wind would have been better but the snow was nice & soft - even over hammered bile tracks

Dave
The Spur Park looks good. How long is the trip in?
Maybee we'll get a chance when I get back.
Cool looking place, Dave. Are those shots looking east? I think Jumping Creek was a little softer than you saw on Friday, but we had to downwind a ways to get past the nasty chop you mentioned. Near the west end it was softening up a bit with just a few ruts to cross.
Its a super easy 5 mile perfectly groomed trail in from Deadmans parking area(just before Forest Green). Skinnable too but a steady up hill all the way. The pics would be looking West & Soutwest....there's more area over the rise you can't see past & around the N side of the trees. Plenty of mellow terrain but some good hilly stuff if the wind was better.
A guy from White Sulphur was telling me about an area called Eagle Park that's much bigger than Spur Park - he said much less bilers too but further west from the highway.

I had to drive up to Brady today and all the frozen ponds had 2" of water on them. I was thinking of looking to Willow creek resevoir or Nilon for some open water.
However 15MPH winds at Monarch hill tomorrow might well get me out to look for a way to get to the snow fields on the east side of Rattlesnake butte.
