Here you go Dave.

I remember you posted something about kiting in the Canadian Rockies a few weeks back. We've been dreaming about kiting up north for years. Maybe Rodgers Pass or someplace closer than Jasper. Columbia Icefields area?
I need to get a hold of one of my dirtbike buddies from the Fernie area that ride snowmobiles in the winter and try to get some info.
Pretty sure this place is randonnee access only.

I contacted several heli/ski

I contacted several heli/ski guide places earlier to see if anyone was interested in having a group(or 1) of kiters in the mix & no one acted very thrilled about it. I think they like to keep the guidees pretty close to the guide's scrutiny at all times up there. Also checked in with Kicking Horse to see if they'd allow slackcountry kiting along the N ridge just outside the boundary - they were less than enthused about it.

I think there's several backcountry huts that can just be rented around Roger's, Wapta, GNP, & Banff without guides but I don't know how tough it is getting into any of them. Most 'bile trails areas charge like $25/day for a trail use permit which seems plenty reasonable to get to terrain like that video shows....Thanks!

Speaking of huts - with all the new snow there could be great potential around the Wapiti cabin down in Taylor Fork/Skyline Ridge areas(S. of Big Sky). Anyone interested in a weekend trip there? Avy danger is bad right now but most of the area doesn't cross avy paths or runout zones - at least the kiteable stuff. Cost for a 3-day weekend there would be ~ $25/person with 4 people. 2 mile bile ride to the cabin.

Forest Service cabins.

We would like to do a weekend or so in a cabin. Pretty tough for us to line up time w/out kids together and all that but we could sure work on it.
Is the cabin available on short notice? The F.S. cabins up here tend to get booked up a year in advance.
Did you get to that cabin in the Crazys you were talking about?
How's the kiting at the Wapiti place? Kite right out of the cabin or more sledding once you're up there?
I'll try to find it on Google Earth.
And back to the Canada thing, I left a message with somebody at Kootenay Kiting? I think based out of Nelson B.C. I'll post if they get back to me with any backcountry info.

If you're willing to go

If you're willing to go week-days many of the cabins are available on short notice, weekends - it usually pays to plan ahead.

Wapiti seems to get booked up fairly regular. There's kiting within site of the cabin but not exactly out the cabin door. Plenty of terrain variety available if you want to bile out to the skyline ridge area. Next weekend dates avail. Feb 18,19,20. After that Mar 4,5,6th

Bennett Cr cabin (NW Crazies) is definitely kiting out the cabin door & the nicest F/S cabin I've stayed in so far. Sleeps 6. There's also some nicer terrain only a couple of miles away.

Then there's Yellow Mule cabin - I've never stayed at but looks interesting. 14 mile bile ride to get to. Doesn't get booked up much. I'm not sure how the snow cover is - but its sitting at 9,000' elev with wide open terrain all around. They have a wood stove but no firewood supplied there????
