It finally happened, a winter water session. The sun was out in the flathead (very rare in Febuary) so I headed down the the beach at Big Fork, put on my new Hyperflex wet suit and busted out the Flysurfer 19 meter speed 3. As I walked out through the ice around the shore I was thinking perhaps I had finally gone to far. This idea quickly vanished as I sent the big boy for a kite loop. My board planed off and it was on. It felt so good to be on the water again. The views were amazing with all the snow covered peaks and the crystal blue water spraying off the board. At one time I wondered what Noah was doing and I wasn't jealous. It was truly a magical day. I cound not help feeling like some how I had cheated the system.

The wet suit was amazing. I was very warm and the air temp was about 35 degrees. I even had to take the hood off because I was too hot. The new wet suits are so much better than the old. I kited for about 2 hours and I never once was cold.

The new kite is also a jem. The 19 meter Flysurfer Speed 3 will triple my days on Flathead Lake. It was blowing less than 8 mph and I was able to stay up wind and have a really good time. I think in 10-12 mph I will be lit. It is really a fun kite to fly, not what I was expecting from a 19 meter kite. Now that I have flown this beast on snow and water, I can give it the Bad Monkey Stamp of Approval. They are worth every penny. For those of you who are currious, lets set up a demo.

I am going to try to keep getting out this winter so I will try to post some pics. If anyone is interested in coming out for some winter water, let me know. I would love to see another kite out there.

Okay... I'll shut up the next time I'm whining about cold glacier lakes in the middle of the summer with my 3/2 steamer on ... you should change your name to loco monkey.

19M

Hey Tony,

I'd be interested in hearing about the 19M and maybe sporting it. Can it be water relaunched in 8mph's, or is it a case of float to the other side or self rescue and pull.... Do you reccomend it over a 15 or 16M?

Thanks

Hey Jerome, I only put the

Hey Jerome,

I only put the kite in the water once during my session but it relaunched easily. I was in shallow water so I was standing, but it seemed to relauch at least as good as an lei kites I have flown. I think the key is to relaunch as quickly as possible before the kite gets wet. I think the 19 is the way to go if you want the ultimate lightwind kite. a 15 may allow you to fly in higher winds of course, but at that point I'll put up the 12. Let me know if you want to give it a try.
